Samah Jabr

Sumud

The texts published here as a book, written by Dr. Samah Jabr between 2019 and 2021, have been brought together under the motto “Sumud”, a concept that means not only being able to survive or draw new strength to cope with stress and adversity and to adapt, but also to maintain a determined attitude of defiance in the face of overwhelm and oppression. The author's thoughts cover many areas from gender difference to racial discrimination in occupied Palestine, from Salafist jihadism - compared here to Zionism - to resistance against the occupation. From Samah Jabr's perspective as a psychiatrist and head of the mental health department of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, particular attention is paid to the topic of mental health and the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic experienced under occupation. A common thread running through the texts is the call for therapeutic solidarity with the oppressed.
